Mashrabiya.02

“Mashrabiya” is the Arabic term given to a type of latticed wood panels seen in oriental cultures. Those would mostly be used as privacy screens on windows or as room dividers, or their patterns would be used in purely decorative ways.

Being raised in three different cultures, having roots in three different countries and having lived in a forth, Paola always considered herself a citizen of the world. In this collection she explores the themes of identity and belonging through the language of architecture, as a nod to her academic background. To keep it sleek, modern and minimal, the star motif is used as the main element around which the pieces are built (as commonly seen on mashrabiyas). Straight lines and touches of color are jointly used to bring the oriental reference into a modern frame.
